Unfollow stops you following an account. Remove follower removes an account from the people following you. These are separate relationships: if you want to change both, check both lists. Neither action makes your account private or replaces blocking.
The iPhone steps below follow Instagram’s Help Center, checked on October 11, 2026. They are based on documentation, not a test in the current app. Select your platform in the linked articles if you use Android or the web.
Choose the result you want
| Your goal | Control | Where to verify the result |
|---|---|---|
| Stop following someone | Unfollow | Their profile and your Following list |
| Remove someone following you | Remove follower | Your Followers list |
| Change both directions | Review both controls | Both lists |
| Review account visibility | Account privacy | Your privacy settings |
Choose based on the result you want. To stop following an account yourself, use Unfollow. To take an account out of your followers, use the control in Followers. If your concern is who can view your content, check account privacy as well.
A two-account example
Suppose you and another account follow each other. The account appears in both your Following and Followers lists. Think of these as two arrows: you follow them, and they follow you.
Unfollow addresses the first arrow. Your check is their profile’s follow button or your Following list. Looking only at your Followers list would check the opposite relationship.
Remove follower addresses the second arrow. Your check is whether that username remains in your Followers list. Removing them is not the same as unfollowing them yourself.
If your goal is to change both directions, check each relationship separately. Confirm the exact username before acting; similar display names can make the wrong account easy to choose. A total follower count does not identify which relationship changed.
How to unfollow someone on iPhone
Instagram’s iPhone unfollow instructions describe this sequence:
- Open the other person’s profile.
- Tap Following.
- Tap Unfollow to confirm.
The documented confirmation is that the profile shows Follow instead of Following. Use that label to check the result for the intended account.
Trying to identify someone who already stopped following you is a different task. Our guide to checking who unfollowed you covers that question.
How to remove a follower on iPhone
Instagram’s iPhone follower-removal article documents these steps for a private account:
- Open your own profile and tap Followers.
- Find the account you want to remove and tap X beside it.
- Tap Remove to confirm.
Check your Followers list afterwards. If the controls on your screen differ, use the platform selector in the official article to check the appropriate instructions.
The article’s private-account condition matters: this walkthrough does not establish which removal controls every public-account interface offers. It also does not change your privacy setting. Do not assume that removing a name from a list prevents that person from viewing public content.
Will the other person be notified?
Instagram says people are not notified when you unfollow them or remove them from your followers. This answers whether Instagram sends a notification; it is not a guarantee that a person cannot notice the changed relationship.
For example, a person could check whether they still follow you or whether you still follow them. The absence of an alert is different from an invisible change. Choose the action for its effect on your account, rather than a promise that nobody will notice.
Can a removed follower still see your content?
Instagram’s public and private account comparison says anyone on Instagram can see a public account’s photos and videos. For a private account, that content is limited to followers, and only people you approve can follow you.
Private does not hide everything. Your profile photo, name, username and bio remain visible to people on or off Instagram. Removing a follower is also separate from blocking; Instagram lists blocking as another option in its removal article.
If visibility is your goal, read Instagram’s account privacy instructions before changing settings. The article also notes that business profiles cannot be private without switching back to a personal account. Decide whether that account-type change suits your needs before making it.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing a follower mean I unfollowed them?
No. Removing someone changes your Followers list; unfollowing changes your Following list. If you want to change both relationships, check each one separately.
Will Instagram notify someone if I unfollow them?
Instagram's Help Center says it does not notify people when you unfollow them. That does not guarantee the person cannot notice the change themselves.
Is removing a follower the same as blocking?
No. Instagram describes blocking as a separate option. Choose a control based on the outcome you want instead of treating follower removal as a block.
Can a removed follower still see my profile?
Removal does not make your account private. Instagram says public-account photos and videos are visible to anyone on Instagram. Your profile photo, name, username and bio remain visible even with a private account.
